Today Michelin released their 30th edition of the Main Cities of Europe guide. The 2011 guide covers 44 cities across 20 European countries (see below for the full list). The Main Cities of Europe guide was first published in 1982.
Contrary to popular expectation , Rene Redzepi's Noma in Copenhagen has not gained a third star. The number of three-star restaurants in the guide remains at 15.
Budapest has done really well this year. This city now boasts two restaurants with a Michelin star, restaurant Onyx being awarded the accolade this year.
Two other European restaurants not featured in previously released guides were awarded their first star too: Olo in Helsinki (Finland) and Thörnströms Kök in Gothenburg (Sweden).
The number of one-star restaurants in the Main Cities of Europe Guide increases with 39 new entries to 284.
In the 2011 guide there are 58 two-star restaurants, with 6 new entries. From previously published guides we were already aware that these six restaurants in Europe's main cities (Paris 3, London 1, Madrid 1, Zurich 1) had been awarded their second star; so no news in this respect.
In the international restaurant world there has been a trend towards value for money since the credit crunch, as is also evinced by this guide. The 2011 edition has 46 new Bib Gourmand entries. Copenhagen has scored particularly well in this category; 6 Copenhagen restaurants have been awarded a Bib Gourmand.
The Main Cities of Europe 2011 guide, which wraps up this Michelin season, features 1,557 hotels and 1,771 restaurants in total in the following cities:
Austria (Vienna, Salzburg), Belgium (Brussels, Antwerp), Czech Republic (Prague), Denmark (Copenhagen), Finland (Helsinki), France (Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg, Toulouse), Germany (Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart), Greece (Athens), Hungary (Budapest), Ireland (Dublin), Italy (Rome, Milan, Turin, Florence), Luxembourg (Luxembourg), Netherlands (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague), Norway (Oslo), Poland (Warsaw, Krakow), Portugal (Lisbon), Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia), Sweden (Stockholm, Gothenburg), Switzerland (Bern, Geneva, Zurich), United Kingdom (London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow).
