Restaurant Überfahrt in Rottach-Egern has been awarded a third star. Executive chef at restaurant Überfahrt is Christian Jürgens (b. 1968), who has trained with some of the biggest names in the industry, like Heinz Winkler, Eckart Witzigmann and Jörg Müller. Restaurant Überfahrt is the fine dining restaurant of Seehotel Überfahrt, located on the shores of the Tegernsee, a lake situated some 50 kilometers south of Munich. Michelin chief inspector Michael Ellis (translated): "His cuisine is exceptionally refined and extremely intelligent."
With this new addition there are now 11 three-star restaurants in Germany. France is leading in Europe with 27, Italy comes in 3rd with 8 three-star restaurants and Germany maintains its solid second place in the European rankings. Germany's other three-star restaurants are: La Vie in Osnabrück, Bareiss in Baiersbronn, Schwarzwaldstube in Baiersbronn, Amador in Mannheim, Aqua in Wolfsburg, Vendôme in Bergisch-Gladbach, Waldhotel Sonnora in Wittlich, Schloss Berg in Perl, La Belle Epoque in Travemünde and Gästehaus Erfort in Saarbrücken.
Three restaurants have gained a second star. Tiger-Gourmetrestaurant in Frankfurt (chef: Andreas Krolik), Facil restaurant in Berlin (chef: Michael Kempf). Furthermore, Baisersbronn, the village in the Black Forest already world-famous for its 7 Michelin stars, has now gone up to 8, because Restaurant Schlossberg (chef: Jörg Sackmann) has also been promoted to two stars. The number of two-star restaurants in Germany now stands at 37.
The 2014 guide will feature 226 one-star restaurants, with 39 new entries this year. Among the new entries are three restaurants in Berlin: Pierre Gagnaire's new restaurant Les Solistes at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Pauly Saal and 5-Cinco. Then there is Agata's in Düsseldorf, Anna Sgroi in Hamburg, Le Patron in Cologne and three more in Munich: EssZimmer, Geisels Werneckhof and Les Deux.
Germany is also seeing a continuing rise of the number of female Michelin-starred chefs. Last year Douce Steiner of Hirschen restaurant in Sulzburg was the first female chef in Germany to win a second star. This year four female chefs have been awarded a Michelin star: Reisers am Stein in Würzburg, the aforementioned Anna Sgroi in Hamburg, Restaurant Clara im Kaisersaal in Erfurt and restaurant Spices on the isle of Sylt.
The Bib Gourmand category (€35 for a three-course menu) also shows a healthy increase. In the 2014 guide Michelin has awarded 51 new restaurants this accolade. The 2014 guide will feature 452 Bib Gourmand restaurants in total.
